It never cease to amaze me how people use times of disaster to appeal to emotions, for example, the pain of the Haitian people have been explain in religious terms nonstop. Riding the buses and walking the streets of New York, one is burden with the idiotic application of revolution, as people try to make sense of the Haitian disaster. Although not in blatant terms, as Pat Robertson’s, these people share the notion that God is the one that strike Haiti. For what, the reason is normally vague and nonsensical or some other religious faith is the one blame. God told us in revolution, they would lament. Emancipate yourself from mental slavery 01/08/2010
![]() The world is a large place, and in our world are many people with different beliefs and interesting cultures. A sure aspect of our lives this fact highlights is that, at some point in time, we will cross path with someone that have a different belief and culture to the one in which we grew up. Why is understanding this important to us? As an Afro-centered person, I was taught to look at religion, mainly the three-monotheist religion (Islam, Judaism and Christianity), with the most skeptical of eyes, and I believe this position makes much sense. It is indeed the rational thing to do. Nuwaubu help pulled me out from blind faith and opens my eyes to these monotheistic religions and their many falsehoods. In fact, Nuwaubu went much farther; defining itself as the science of “Sound Right Reason.” However, one cannot have sound reasoning if one does not have the “right knowledge” or the right information. Certainly, Grenadians love a good Parang festival. Carriacou is one of the stop many of us foreign Grenadians make when visiting Grenada during the Christmas seasons. Similarly, many locals look forward to this time and make the voyage to Carriacou every year. Why do we engage in this yearly passion? Well, it is because of the Parang festival, of course. Indeed, if we spend some time in New York, any conversion about spending Christmas in Grenada always come down to the fun one enjoys while attending Carriacou’s Parang festival. But what is so special about Carriacou’s Parang? Ask any of the Parang lovers and they will tell you, apart from the social aspect, it’s the Parang songs. In fact, the features of these songs that keep these people coming back every year is the aspect that gives information about what is happing in the country. Yes, Grenadians love hearsay. Sadly, however, this very aspect is about to be eliminated because it is discribe as being smut. This question comes up often in my conversations with Grenadian Christians. Indeed, this question has much to do with the religious idea of original sin, and since most of those I converse with are of Catholic faith and this topic never gets omitted. Certainly, there are many different variants of answers given, but commonly, they all give the one basic answer to this question, yes, they are responsible. However, I beg to differ, and I will tell you why; a critical and rational view of the biblical narrative expresses a different viewpoint, from which believers intentionally shy away. Here is what I mean. ![]() There is no refuting that the most religious people, or people who appear to be, are the most downtrodden, the poorest or are people in deep need of help, and the people of the Philippians picking up the pieces after those two dreaded typhoons is an example of people in need. Indeed, under such heartbroken and emotionally draining times such as what the people Philippians are now facing, one normally turns first to his or her God or gods for comfort. On the other hand, many also question their God or gods competence. Why you did not protected us, they sometimes, and quite understandable, ask. These question and others like it are asked because the people possesses a deep-seated belief, as they were told, that their God or gods promises to look-over and protect them only if they belief and have faith. However, now the time has come for the God or gods to prove what has been said of them, instead, they failed to deliver, and, why me, why me becomes the cry. ![]() I know what you are thinking, but no, it is not them, instead a God fearing, Jesus loving Holy man, will do it. "A pastor in the US has revealed that his church is planning to burn Bibles and books by Christian authors on Halloween." To end world hunger, sell the Vatican 10/17/2009
Why did I not think about that? A brilliant plan indeed, selling the Vatican on behalf of ending poverty and world starvation and hunger is the Godly thing to do, isn’t it? Oh! So, you are an Atheist 10/11/2009
Religious discussion has been, as politics, a hot bed for disrespect and a fertile ground for hatred. It is like stepping on a roadside bomb. It does not only build heated “debate” but can also bring to an end all the social connections with others an individual enjoyed and spent years in building up. Family can and most often do cut all ties and friends eventually view you as a demonic and evil person, all done just because they find out that one’s view happens to be different from theirs. |
